Apareció en 1936, cuando George McCullagh compró y fusionó dos periódicos competidores, el liberal Globe (fundado en 1844) y el conservador Mail and Empire (fundado en 1872 como The Mail). Se trata de un periódico que concibe su función como "independiente, pero no neutral. La publicación de los textos de discursos, debates parlamentarios y otros documentos, lo ha convertido en el periódico archivístico de Canadá. Su fuerte es la cobertura de noticias internacionales.
